Du Bastion 's central location offers great possibilities
to enjoy Delfzijl and surroundings to the fullest.
Delfzijl
is part of the 180 kilometer long, international Dollard-cycle route.
Hotel-restaurant Du Bastion is bordering the town's
main shopping center; a five-minute walk will bring you to a small
beach. About half a kilometer from which you will enter the area
of Delfzijl's exciting sea port. In the summer of 2003 Delfzijl
will transform into "Delfsail" for the fourth time. Lots
of "tall ships" from all over the world will visit
the harbour. Hundreds of thousands of visitors enjoyed previous
editions of this beautiful event.
Many
of the local sights are at close range. A nice example is the quaint
fisherman's village of Termunterzijl. No wonder the "Belgian
Agatha Christie", Georges Simenon was inspired to write his
first Maigret novel here in 1929. Simenon was a guest of
Du Bastion 's at the time. A statue of the French detective
Maigret can be seen overlooking the town's river Damsterdiep.
Delfzijl's annual Whitsun celebration has been a much appreciated
event for some 120 years now. It has international rowing and sailing
races, a fair and many traditional and cultural festivities around
the waterfront.
